Piedmont (Piemonte) is the ultimate dream location for travel lovers, but it is often overlooked in favor of more popular Italian destinations like Venice, Rome and Florence.
We have compiled five reasons why this food and wine capital of the world needs to be on your list of places to travel to ASAP.
SIDE NOTE: Lonely Planet agrees with us as they named Piemonte as THE place to go to in 2019. The borders are now fully open, making it the perfect time to start planning the ultimate trip of lifetime.
Wine
Piedmont boasts more DOCG wines than any other region of Italy; ranging from white, red, sparkling and dessert wines. Barolo and Barbaresco are widely considered to be the best red wines in the world and are known as the King and Queen of Wines, respectively.
Truffles & Food
The most pungent, expensive and highly addictive truffles in the world are found in the hills and woods of the Langhe in wine country. The International Alba White Truffle Festival is held here every year, October through November. A few shavings of truffles on the top of a dish can be a heavenly experience.
The region also has one of the highest concentrations of Michelin restaurants in all of Europe and is the birthplace and worldwide headquarters of the Slow Food Movement in Bra. The world has fallen in love with Nutella, which is made right here in Piedmont.
UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Piedmont is home to numerous UNESCO world heritage sites including:
- Architecture and royal residences of Savoy in Turin
- Sacred mountains of the Alps which are magnificent to behold
- Ancient prehistoric pile dwellings in and around the Alps
- Langhe, Monferrato and Asti wine regions which include the castle of Grinzane Cavour
Diversity in Landscape
Rolling green hills of wine country, deep, crystal clear lakes (think Lago di Orta), historic, medieval castles and warm, welcoming people will absolutely inspire you to fall in love with the region and provide you with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for world class photos.
Affordability
Typically, a weeklong, decadent trip to wine country with Michelin restaurants, wine tastings and luxury accommodations would cost over $10,000 in Napa Valley. In Piedmont, it can be done for almost half that price.
