LA Rail is the collaboration of five family owners who each with their individual vintage rail cars decided to join forces to create the collection back in 2006.
"We've owned our car for a quarter of a century and we bought it as a fixer-upper and spent the first seven years or so restoring it," said conductor Bill Hatrick about he and his wife's car the Overland Trail. The pair was able to upgrade the car to meet Amtrak certification, which is the primary means of towing the streamliners.
The vintage rail cars are available for chartered trips and also a number of itineraries open to the public. Those looking of a unique Valentine's Day getaway should consider the overnight excursion to San Diego, set for Feb. 9-10, using the Pacific Sands and Salisbury Beach Pullman sleeper cars.
The Santa Barbara Vino Train is a regularly scheduled trip and often includes the Silver Splendor car with it's popular dome seating to view the stunning California coastline.
For those considering a much longer rail experience, the Southern Comfort trip scheduled for this April includes stops in New Orleans, Miami, Washington D.C., and Chicago.
